Obituary

Andrew Wu, Ph.D., of Cherry Hill, NJ, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2023, at age 85. Beloved husband of Angela Wu (nee Fu); dear father of Christine Wu, M.D. (Matthew Heyse); loving grandfather of Sarah Connell (Christopher Higgins) and Amanda Connell (Peter Shields); and cherished brother of Raymond Wu (the late Joan).

Andrew was born on January 23, 1938, to Ming-Tsu and Cheng-Hsiang Wu in Shanghai, China. At age 11, he and his family fled to Taipei, Taiwan. Andrew studied physics at National Cheng Kung University, graduating in 1960, and served in the Taiwanese Armed Forces in 1961. Andrew married Angela (his wife of more than 60 years) in 1962 and the couple gave birth to their daughter, Christine, later that year. In August of 1963, Andrew immigrated to the United States to continue his education at Emory University. He received his master’s in Physics from Emory in 1964 and later his PhD in Physics from Temple University in 1971. In 1972 he completed his post-doctoral NIH fellowship in Medical Physics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Andrew went on to be internationally recognized for his research in radiation therapy and gave talks around the globe which paved the way for the next generation. Over the course of his career, he taught at UPMC and Thomas Jefferson University, where he received numerous teaching awards.

Andrew wore many hats: husband, father, brother, son, uncle, friend, and teacher, but his favorite was “Kung Kung” (grandfather).

Andrew loved basketball, flowers, traveling, painting, photography, Chinese opera, playing mahjong, and spending time with his granddaughters, their spouses, and their dogs.

Our family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support during this difficult time. Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions in his memory to The Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org).  Arr. by BOCCO FUNERAL HOME, Cherry Hill, NJ.
