Three Generations of Caring for South Jersey Families
In 1950, Joseph C. Bocco, Sr. and his wife Phyllis opened the doors of Bocco Funeral Home in South Camden, New Jersey — the same neighborhood where Joe had been born and raised. A proud Italian-American, a devoted family man, and a United States Army veteran who had served his country during World War II, Joe brought the same sense of duty and compassion to funeral service. After earning his degree from the Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia, he knew exactly where he wanted to build his life’s work: in the neighborhood he was born and raised in, among the family and friends he knew and loved.
For nearly 25 years, Joe and Phyllis served their Camden neighbors with a deeply personal kind of care which could only come from someone who grew up down the street, who knew your family by name, and who understood that every life deserved to be honored with dignity. Together, they raised three children, Joseph Jr., Judy and James while building a funeral home rooted in those values Joe held most dear: compassion, honesty, and respect for every family who walked through their doors.
Those who knew Joe remember a man of deep warmth and quick wit. Someone who could comfort a grieving family in one moment and bring a smile to their faces in the next. His dedication to the community extended beyond the funeral home as well; Joe served as a Camden County Coroner throughout the late 1960’s until 1982.
In 1978, the Bocco family relocated the funeral home to its current location at 1300 North Kings Highway in Cherry Hill, NJ. While the new location was larger and completely remodeled, the funeral home retained the neighborhood warmth that had defined it from the very beginning.
When Joe passed away in 1986, his wife Phyllis and their son, Joseph Jr., carried the business forward without missing a step. Joe Jr. had grown up in the apartment above the original funeral home in Camden and had been part of the family business his entire life. Under his steady leadership, Bocco Funeral Home has maintained the same personal, family-centered approach for nearly four decades because for the Bocco family, this has never been just a business.
Today, the tradition continues with a third generation. Nicholas Joseph Lukaszewicz, Joe Sr.’s grandson, is a fully licensed funeral director who grew up learning the same values that built this funeral home more than seven decades ago. Together, Joe Jr. and Nick carry forward their family’s founding promise: that every family who turns to Bocco Funeral Home will be treated with the dignity, respect, and genuine care they deserve.
